Our Story

Smith, Kunz & Associates is a full-service accounting firm based in Rexburg and Idaho Falls. Our Certified Public Accountants and staff strive to provide quick, actionable advice and expert services to help our clients meet their personal and business goals. We excel at serving clients throughout the United States while enjoying the benefits of living in a small town in one of the most beautiful corners of the country.

After nine years of public and private accounting practice in multiple industries, Brad Smith, CPA started what is now Smith, Kunz in January 1994. Eric Kunz joined Brad in 2004 after successfully developing several companies into attractive acquisition targets. Smith, Kunz’s client base has grown steadily every year for over 20 years despite the firm’s reluctance to advertise. All growth has been due to satisfied clients.

Staff Bios

Brad

Brad has worked as a CPA in East Idaho for 40 years, starting what would become Smith, Kunz & Associates in 1994. He strives to provide the same quality service to each client, be it a Fortune 100 company or household making less than the Federal poverty level.

Eric

Eric has 30 years’ experience in an accounting firm.  He specializes in working with individuals who own their own business, helping small business owners become big business owners. Eric has also run several companies and currently sits as an advisory member of several local boards.

Yasmeen

Yasmeen Padilla is the Office Manager & has been a valued member of the team for six years. With several years of experience supporting the firm and a focus on bookkeeping since 2023, she is dedicated to providing accurate, dependable service to every client.

Mindy

Mindy Terry is an Enrolled Agent. She focuses on bookkeeping, QuickBooks clean ups, and tax preparation. She brings 10 years of tax experience to the firm.

Mindy graduated from Brigham Young University-Idaho with a Bachelor’s degree in general studies with an emphasis in Accounting. She lives and works remotely in Idaho Falls with her husband, and three busy boys. Outside of work, Mindy can be found planning trips and taking her family on adventures.

Brenda

Brenda has lived in Rexburg, Idaho for over 20 years. She graduated from BYU-Idaho with a bachelor’s in Accounting, and then from Idaho State University with a Master’s in Accounting. Brenda has worked as an accountant for twelve years specializing in both business and individual tax returns. When she isn’t in the office she loves spending time with her grandkids.

Mikayla

Mikayla Reck is a staff accountant specializing in tax preparation, bookkeeping, tax resolution, and financial statement services. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Brigham Young University – Idaho, as well as three years of experience in the accounting profession. She will soon be an Enrolled Agent, which will further increase her expertise in tax matters. After work, she enjoys staying active by working out or riding her horses. Otherwise, she’s inside with a good book or writing her own stories.

Holly

Holly Jones has spent the last six years as Bookkeeping Manager at Smith, Kunz & Associates, bringing 25 years of bookkeeping experience to every client she works with. A QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor skilled in both Desktop and Online, she also lends a hand with payroll to keep clients running smoothly.

Holly loves getting to know her clients and their businesses and takes pride in making bookkeeping feel less like a headache and more like one less thing to worry about.

Ivette

Ivette Duran is the first point of contact at the Rexburg office, she is dedicated to creating a welcoming and professional experience for every client. She manages the front desk and provides dependable support to both clients and the office team. Known for her friendly personality, attention to detail, and commitment to excellent customer service, she strives to make every interaction positive and every client feel valued.

Outside the office, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband and making the most of the outdoors.

Janeth

Janeth Rodriguez has been a dedicated member of the Smith Kunz team for over 22 years. With decades of experience in tax services and client support, she is committed to providing knowledgeable, accurate, and personalized assistance to every client.

Janeth is certified in Fraud Document Recognition and specializes in ITIN processing and basic tax preparation. As a bilingual professional fluent in both English and Spanish, she enjoys helping individuals and families from diverse backgrounds understand the tax process and feel confident every step of the way.

Jared

Jared has over 30 years’ experience in various accounting fields. He has been with Smith, Kunz & Associates for 7 years & specifically assists clients with payroll and bookkeeping.

Magdalena

Magdalena Montoya is the face of our Idaho Falls office, where she supports daily operations and helps ensure all clients receive exceptional service. Known for her organization, reliability, and positive attitude, she enjoys building strong relationships with both clients & coworkers. Outside the office, she loves staying active, being creative and spending time in the community.

Braxton

Braxton McCandless is a full-time staff accountant specializing in tax planning, consulting, and preparation for both individuals and businesses. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and is currently studying for the CPA exams.

He particularly enjoys helping business owners navigate complex tax matters. In addition to tax services, he provides bookkeeping support and is QuickBooks Certified, helping clients maintain accurate financial records throughout the year.
